The most common mistake AI users make is having AI do all the work.

Large language models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) can’t do everything for you.

Relying on them to do all your work is harmful and kills the effectiveness of AI.

On the other hand, using AI scarcely limits your efficiency.

If you understand how to use AI effectively, you can save time, be more creative, and grow your business faster.

Let’s get into how to do this…

1/ The 4D AI fluency framework

Rick Dakan and Joseph Feller developed the 4D AI fluency framework to explain how to use AI effectively.

These are the 4Ds:

Delegation

Delegation is figuring out when to delegate work to AI or do it yourself.

You should do tasks that require personal and high-level thinking.

But for tasks where you need feedback or don’t want to do everything manually, AI can help.

Description

Description is how you prompt and give commands to get the best output from the AI model.

To create an effective prompt, give AI context and explain specifically what you want the AI to do and how you want it done.

Pro tip: My favorite way to make a prompt is telling AI to “make me a prompt about __.”

The AI model will then give you a detailed prompt that you can plug back into the model to get the best response.

Discernment:

Discernment is evaluating the AI-generated information so that it’s accurate and useful.

If the content is useful, great.

But if it’s not, update the description or respond in the chat with your feedback.

This is called the description-discernment loop because you refine and update prompts (descriptions) to get better outcomes (discernment).

Diligence

Diligence is taking responsibility for using AI.

This means being honest about using AI and following the industry rules.

The 4D AI fluency framework will help you get the most out of AI.

Now, I’ll cover some real examples where you can implement AI in your business.

Deconstructed: Customer support replies

A business spends hours every day responding to customer support emails.

Responding to each email individually takes up important time that can be used elsewhere. So, the business gives AI its last 10 customer support replies as a style reference and tells AI to draft responses.

Then, they review and personalize the message before responding.

Deconstructed: Market research

A business spends hours on market research.

So, the business uses a prompt for AI to do the long data-gathering part.

“Compile competitor pricing, positioning, and messaging. Base it on our industry, business model, and other important factors.”

Once AI responds, they ensure the information is accurate and analyze it based on their experience.

There are many ways to use AI in your business.

Use delegation to choose what AI will do and what you will do.
Use description to create a comprehensive prompt.
Use discernment to evaluate the AI’s output.
Use diligence to use AI responsibly.

Until next time,
