Wise Words: The most successful people are the ones who have failed the most
My First Business
I consumed hundreds of hours of books, videos, and courses on business. I thought I was a business expert and after watching a video on dropshipping, I naively believed I could easily make money online.
I found the product I was going to sell (custom Airpod cases) ordered a few of them, bought a domain, and started creating the website. It took me two weeks as I used the internet and youtube to find the right website design, create product images from Canva, and write descriptions for each product.
“What’s a cooler Airpod case this one or that?”
“Airpod cases based on your personality type”
“The 5 coolest Airpod cases you have to get”
I recorded and uploaded videos on YouTube, Instagram Reels, and Tiktok for a week. Zero views. I thought I was “shadowbanned” or the algorithm hated me.
Then something incredible happened. A few hours after posting I checked my Tiktok page, 50 views. I was overjoyed and knew all my “hard work” was going to pay off. 50 unique viewers meant 50 potential customers. At least one of them would be interested in buying Airpods, right?
Wrong. I created and failed videos for another two weeks and a big $0 stared at me. After a few more videos went nowhere, I sadly closed the store.
What I learned
Starting a business teaches more than any course or book does. Even though I “failed” I learned way more about product selection, websites, and marketing than I could have from reading a book or watching a course. It gave me real experience and application of the content I consumed.
Get started marketing and validating your product as soon as possible. Choosing the right product and creating a solid website is important but it shouldn’t take a long time. Focus on volume of content and you can change how you present your product and website later.
Consistency and quantity of content wins. If I had continued making content on Airpods and posted consistently for a few months, I’m sure I would have gotten more views and maybe even a few customers. Quitting too early is why I failed.
