If you want to change who you are, you need to first change what you think.

Your thoughts shape your actions.

Your actions shape your habits.

Your habits shape your identity.

Your identity shapes who you are.

Successful entrepreneurs think of original ideas, learn faster, and get results while consuming less.

So, I thought I’d share my thoughts on how to consume content to learn effectively (and not waste time).

Audit your content diet.

If you consume what everyone else is consuming, you’ll think what everyone else is thinking.

So, be intentional about the content you consume.

  • Creators you follow

  • Books you read

  • Ads you see

  • Social media you scroll on

When consuming, ask these questions:

  1. Is this making me think differently?

  2. Are these ideas from the original creator?

  3. Would I pay for this?

❝

Curate ruthlessly. What you consume defines who you become.

Keep the best sources of information. Eliminate all the surface-level content.

The do, learn, redo framework

I learned this framework from Shaan Puri. If you want to learn effectively, follow this.

  1. Do

Create the post. Take the practice test. Shoot the shot.

Doing first creates a baseline of what you know (or don’t) and helps you target your later learning.

You also prime yourself to understand the content and how it works in practice, instead of just conceptual knowledge.

  1. Learn

Focus on what you don’t know. Get targeted practice and spend your time and resources fixing what you aren’t good at.

Watch tutorials, read books, and get feedback from experts.

  1. Redo

Redo the same task and use what you learned to improve.

Then repeat the cycle.

Deconstructed: video editing

If I wanted to learn video editing fast, this is what I’d do:

1. Start with a small task

I would try to edit a video and play around with the settings.

I would learn the different features, where everything is, and develop a basic understanding of video editing.

This is the “do” portion.

2. Watch a tutorial and follow along

I would watch video editing tutorials and edit alongside my own video.

I would learn the basics first, and then hone in on the gaps in my knowledge.

3. Use what I learned to redo the task

Finally, I would use what I learned to edit a new video.

By redoing the task, I will figure out what I’m good at and what I need to improve on, and then the process starts over.

Until next Saturday,

- Warren
